Research pathways to low greenhouse-gas-emitting energy systems are focus of October symposium at Stanford

Stanford, California—September 11, 2007—The Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) will hold its third annual energy research symposium Oct. 1-3 at Frances C. Arrillaga Alumni Center. Researchers from Stanford and around the world will discuss scientific results and developments that may lead to energy technologies with significantly reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

The symposium, "Research Pathways to Low GHG-Emitting Energy Systems," is free and open to the Stanford community and other researchers and energy professionals.

"The GCEP symposium this year will cover a broad range of science and engineering research to enable low-GHG energy systems," said Franklin M. Orr Jr., GCEP director. "The outstanding set of speakers, including many GCEP researchers, will make the symposium an excellent venue to learn about the latest research toward developing long-term technical solutions for our energy needs."

The symposium will open with a keynote address given by R. K. Pachauri, chief executive of the Energy and Resources Institute and chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The first day of the conference will include general sessions in which representatives from key segments of the energy sector will provide their perspectives of the path forward for energy research. Technical experts in a broad set of energy areas also will give an overview of the research progress made and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Technical sessions on the second and third days will include presentations by GCEP investigators highlighting the results of their research and poster sessions in which all GCEP investigators and their graduate students will provide details of their work.

The symposium will cover the following topics:

Monday, Oct. 1: General Sessions

  • Progress and Opportunities in Energy Research (afternoon)

Tuesday, Oct. 2: Technical/Poster Sessions

  • Solar Energy (morning)
  • Bioenergy Storage and Conversion (afternoon)

Wednesday, Oct. 3: Technical/Poster Sessions

  • Carbon Capture and Storage (morning)
  • Advanced Energy Transformations (afternoon)
