Opportunities for Fundamental Research and Breakthrough in Nuclear Fusion May 1–2, 2006 The Westin Princeton at Forrestal Village Princeton, NJ As part of its evaluation of the area of Advanced Nuclear Technologies, GCEP held a one-and-a-half-day workshop on fusion energy. This workshop focused on some fundamental scientific research in the fields of magnetically confined plasmas and materials for fusion. Alternative fusion technology areas are being assessed separately. Topics discussed during the workshop include global
confinement concepts, magnetohydrodynamic stability, turbulent transport,
energetic particles, plasma-wall interactions, superconductor materials for
high field magnets, and reduced activation materials for the reactor structure.
The presentations and the discussions focused on identifying opportunities for
breakthrough research that would either complement current investigations or
explore innovative alternative approaches that will enable the realization of magnetic
nuclear fusion. The workshop was held at the Westin Princeton at
