Carbon Management in Manufacturing Industries April 15-16, 2008 Stanford University As part of its assessment of energy technologies that might significantly reduce CO2 emissions, GCEP hosted a two-day workshop on the management of carbon in manufacturing industries. According to predictions from Lawrence Livermore National Lab, the manufacturing industries will account for approximately one-third of total energy demand in 2025. It is anticipated that much of that demand will be met by the direct use of fossil fuels. The cement, metals and refining industries are the largest industrial contributors to energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Chemicals, mining, food processing and forest products are significant as well. At this workshop, technical experts in these industries shared their recent research. Talks addressed technology advancements required to meet emissions reduction targets in areas such as Carbon Capture, Advanced Combustion, Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy. The objective of the workshop was to identify innovative, high-risk research opportunities in technologies specific to the manufacturing sector that could significantly limit the amount of CO2 released to the atmosphere.
